I’m Bob Larson. The deadline is fast approaching for small meat processing operations to apply for operations grants from the Washington State Department of Agriculture.

The department’s Hector Castro says smaller projects can get up to $150,000 while larger projects could get up to $750,000 …

CASTRO … “The deadline for the smaller projects is the end of this month, February 28th. But, if it’s a larger project, those applications don’t need to be in until March 7th.”

Castro says learn how to apply on their website …

CASTRO … “We do have a lot of information on our website www.agr.wa.gov/grants with examples of what would be an eligible expense, what might be ineligible, and explanations on how to fill out the application.”

Castro says the pandemic made it clear more meat and poultry processing options were needed …

CASTRO … “This is really meant to strengthen those smaller operations, make them better positioned to serve some of these smaller ranch and poultry operations, anyone producing meat or poultry, so that they can, again, continue to provide products for consumers here in Washington state.”

Especially during these difficult times …

CASTRO … “Again, this is really kind of meant to help strengthen our food supply chain overall in Washington state, while at the same time helping our local food economies.”

The deadline to apply for small projects is February 28th and March 7th for larger projects. Learn more at www.agr.wa.gov/grants
