I’m Bob Larson. The White House is apparently standing by their pick to lead the Bureau of Land Management after Tracy Stone-Manning was confirmed by the Senate last week.

But, U.S. Representative Dan Newhouse was one of many Republicans opposed to the confirmation, which he calls unfortunate …

NEWHOUSE … “Miss Stone-Manning has a very interesting past that I think disqualifies her from having this important position.”

Stone-Manning’s past, Newhouse says brings her qualifications into question …

NEWHOUSE … “Do you remember back in the 80’s and 90’s, the practice of spiking trees to prevent logging. She was involved in that activity, which is very detrimental to people’s health if that is followed through to its end.”

Newhouse says leading the BLM involves important decisions for rural communities and agriculture in the West …

NEWHOUSE … “This has some very interesting and controversial opinions and views about how public lands should be utilized, and for those reasons I felt that this is not the right position for her and not the right position for farmers and ranchers and conservationists and our communities in the West.”

Stone-Manning has also taken heat for her graduate thesis in which she endorsed population control to protect the environment.

Tune in tomorrow for more … on this controversial pick to be our new BLM director.
