Food Systems Need Farmers to be Profitable
When it comes to having a strong food system, agricultural productivity is an important piece of the puzzle. But there are other considerations as well, says Inari CEO Ponsi Trivisvavet. As a company they are focused on designing seed to reach the full potential to not only be more productive, but more efficient, resilient, and profitable.
Trivisvavet… “One, we need to make sure that it serves needs in terms of the productivity to serve feeding the world. The second piece of the food system is how do we do that in a way that we are still protecting our environment? And then the third one, how do we do that to essentially respect the profitability of the farmers and increase the profitability on farm in order to improve the community where the farmers live. And that's how we define the combination of these three things as (the) food system.”
The company uses multiplex gene editing to improve the genetics of staple crops like corn and soybeans. She says this work is essential for the future of agriculture.
Trivisvavet… “There shouldn't be a debate whether we should feed the world, should we take care of the planet or should we make sure that the rural community can be (profitble) within the community there? All of these three things can co-exist.”
