**Hot weather along the California coast places a strain on cool-season crops as a University of California specialist advises farmers on the Central Coast to irrigate their vegetable crops the proper length of time to prevent heat damage.

Another farm advisor reports losses to strawberries from the high temperatures.

UC Cooperative Extension also says avocados require care to prevent hot weather from harming trees and fruit.

**Salmonella Newport cases in the U.S. and Canada continue to increase, with more than 1,000 cases linked to onions from Thomson International.

thepacker.com reports, the company has recalled all onions it shipped from May 1 to August 1, including yellow, white, red and sweet onions shipped to customers in all 50 states.

**The Washington State Department of Agriculture has trapped the first male Asian giant hornet detected in the U.S.

According to growingproduce.com, the hornet was caught in a bottle trap in Whatcom County where a mated queen was found dead earlier this year and a suspected bee kill was reported in 2019.

WSDA will be setting live traps in the area in an attempt to trap a live Asian giant hornet, tag it, and track it back to its nest, and eradicate it.
