Spray Safe events are happening throughout California for farmers, farm employees, pest control advisors, and applicators.

Roger Isom is the President and CEO of the California Cotton Ginners and Growers Association that has helped coordinate the event.

Isom…”For example, one of the topics we covered were the new handling requirements for Paraquat. So we go through those. We've covered the personal protective equipment requirements, the handling requirements. We do it in both English and Spanish, so it's clearly communicated. We had County ag commissioners in the case of the one in Fresno, both from Fresno and Madera County...

...Basically just get what's the latest information that we need to know and go back and say, look, when you're handling chemicals, this is what you need to do. When you're calibrating your equipment to make sure that you don't have situations of drift and things like that. And then a very simple one, but it tends to be a problem, is just communications between farmers that might have fields next to each other or orchards next to each other. The goal is to eliminate and never have another accident. That's why the primary focus is on the education and outreach. But also in the event there is one, what do we do and how do we handle it?”

Isom hopes the Spray Safe events will continue to be held annually around the state. More information about future events can be found on the CAPCA website.
