Newer Hard White Winter Wheat Varieties for Available for Fall Planting Season

We continue our conversation with PlainsGold Seed and Trait Specialist Joe Westhoff about some of the hard white winter wheat varieties PlainsGold has available for growers.

Westhoff: "A white wheat program, we are working with Ardent Mills to sell and produce hard white wheat that they are using in what they call their Ultragrain Program. It is a premium program with specific varieties of wheat — Snowmass is one, Sunshine is another and Thunder CL is a third one. They are raised at a premium. You write a contract with Ardent Mills to get paid a premium to deliver these varieties to the Ardent Mills system."

Snowmass combines good dryland yields and good test weights with excellent milling and baking characteristics.

Sunshine is PlainsGold's newest hard white winter wheat variety and is a very good-yielding variety with very good milling and baking quality. Sunshine also has good drought tolerance and is well adapted for production in the High Plains region.

Thunder CL is a single-gene Clearfield® hard white winter wheat variety that is tolerant to Beyond™ herbicide for broad-spectrum weed control, including problematic winter annual grassy weeds. In addition, Thunder CL combines good yields, good stress tolerance, good disease resistance, good test weights and superior milling and baking qualities.
