Newer Winter Wheat Varieties for Available for Fall Planting Season
As wheat growers are considering what varieties of winter wheat to plant this fall, I spoke with PlainsGold Seed and Trait Specialist Joe Westhoff about some of the winter wheat variety PlainsGold has available for growers.Today he shares more about the some of the available hard red winter wheat varieties.Westhoff: "Avery has done very well in the test plots the last few years. It was released as foundation seed last year. And is now as registered so some of it will be available to the average farmer this fall."
Westhoff continues with two more varieties
Westhoff: "The next variety on the list is Byrd and it's has been around since 2012. It has been a very popular variety in Colorado and into Kansas. As of last year, it has been planted on over 30 percent of the acres in Colorado. It is a good producing variety and growers have been very happy with it. Another variety we have if you have winter annual grass problems is Brawl CL Plus. It is a two-gene Clearfield and it has a resistance to a grass herbicide that you can use in growing wheat to help take out feral rye, downy brome and jointed grass in your wheat crop."
Tomorrow we will continue our conversation with Westhoff and discuss PlainsGold's hard white winter wheat options.
