WHO Points Finger

WHO Points Finger. I'm Greg Martin with Lacy Gray for Colorado Ag Today.

Last month the International Agency for Research on Cancer, a division of the World Health Organization, released results of an assessment on herbicide and pesticide carcinogenicity, which named the glyphosate as "probably carcinogenic." Glyphosate is a chief compound found in Roundup and this report links it to cancer.

GRAY: The term "probably carcinogenic" means they believes glyphosate is linked to cancer, but the evidence was not conclusive enough to prove it is a definitive cause of cancer. One Colorado producer says that there is a lot of misinformation out there and that he and many other people in the ag industry believe that a lot of products and Roundup in particular are some of the most trusted compounds on the planet.

MARTIN: Glyphosate really is one of the go-to products on the farm and there has been a lot of questions regarding it and its use over the years. Studies by the FDA and EPA have found glyphosate to be safe for use but that doesn't seem to halt the other side from continuing their quest to ban the use. The findings in this new report seem to be pointed toward another group of people: the consumers.

GRAY: Of course with these kinds of reports there is always the chance that the public consumer will get more misinformation. Ag industry officials across the state and around the globe or queuing up to support glyphosate and its use.

And that's Colorado Ag Today. I'm Greg Martin, thanks for listening on the Ag Information Network of the West.
