Hidden Surprise

Hidden Surprise

Hidden Surprise. I'm Greg Martin with today's Fruit Grower Report.

I used to love to buy a box of Cracker Jacks because there was a little surprise inside. Alan Taylor with Proprietary Variety Management or PVM says they have just announced a new product with a hidden surprise. It's a red fleshed apple.

TAYLOR: When you have an apple that's as unique as the red flesh apple at least early on in its marketing because of its uniqueness it would probably sell very well and at a very high price. But the limited taste tests we have had with this it has a fantastic flavor as well. It's very interesting. To me it was berries and a whole bunch of other flavors.

Red fleshed apples are not new and in fact there has been a plethora of unusual colored fruits and vegetables in the market. Purple potatoes, blood oranges and the like. So far though this new apple is only known as the "Hidden Surprise."

TAYLOR: This is one of those early stage varieties which has yet to be named but that process will be starting down the road. The whole red flesh area is in its very early stages so the naming part is still a little ways ahead.

But Taylor says don't look for it in the grocery stores yet.

TAYLOR: We're probably as long as seven or eight years before there's any volume that will be in the supermarkets. We're working off of an initial tree at this point so it's going to take a while and our partners are going to be working with us; that's Stemilt Growers and Chelan Fresh Marketing.

Can't wait to try it.
