GM Alfalfa Update & Nutrition Reform plus Mitigating Risks

GM Alfalfa Update & Nutrition Reform plus Mitigating Risks. I'm Greg Martin with today's Northwest Report.

Testing on the alfalfa found in eastern Washington confirms that there was a low level presence of RoundUp Ready seed but that those levels were well within the guidelines for both export and domestic. RoundUp Ready hay has been fully approved for use by the USDA. Washington State Department of Agriculture's Mike Louisell.

LOUISELL: The U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced that they will not take any further action on this matter. In other words they are not going to do an investigation and that's good from the standpoint that at least now we know where everything stands on this issue.

The House spent considerable time yesterday debating the Nutrition Reform and Work Opportunity Act of 2013 (H.R. 3102), sponsored by Agriculture Committee Chairman Frank Lucas. The vote was presided over by Washington Congressman Doc Hastings and as expected narrowly passed with 12 Republican nay votes. It will not head over to the Senate where it and the farm only portion passed earlier this year can be sent to conference.

Now mitigating disaster risks. Rod Bain has more.
