I'm KayDee Gilkey with the U.S. Potato Update brought to you by Syngenta and the United States Potato Board. Listen carefully so you can answer the Spuds, Scales and Sleds Sweepstakes question.

The United States Potato Board International Marketing Vice President John Toaspern says in February the USDA purchased 240 metric tons of fortified dehy granules headed to Cameroon as part of an international food assistance program food basket which will be provided as school lunches in 150 participating schools.

He says that fortified dehy potato granules really meet the need of international food assistance programs.

Toaspern: "The granules are fortified with some vitamins as well as iron to help complete the nutritional aspect and provide a more complete food to the children who are receiving this. So we really hope as the USDA and the U.S. agency for International Development move forward with trying to improve the foods they are delivering in these situations. And try to make them more specific to the needs of the people they are feeding; these fortified granules will have a greater role because they do fit those highly specific needs.”

Toaspern adds that the USPB’s nutritionist will be soon be traveling to Cameroon to assist in teaching how to use the dehy product and help develop menu items including the dehy granules.

That’s the U.S. Potato Update brought to you by the United States Potato Board, maximizing return on grower investment. ?
