7-31 SS Cougar Hunting
Want a big game hunt in the Northwest? How about a cougar hunt? I might have a good answer for you when we get back.
I was talking with Dale Denney who owns Bear Paw Outfitters in Colville, WA the other day and he mentioned cougar hunting which is something that piqued my interest because I’ve heard so many wild stories about cougar. Anyway Dale set me straight and put away all the hype. “We operate in 4 states, Idaho, Washington, Utah and Montana. We specialize in Western big game. We hunt for all the different species. Mule deer is the thing we do the most hunts for but we also do white tail, elk, cougar, bear and mooose. How do you mount a cougar hunt? We see all kinds of people from all walks of society that are interested in cougar hunting. The way that we actually conduct the hunt is that we use 4 wheel drives and try to cover a lot of ground looking for tracts in the mountains. Once we find a fresh set of tracks, we put the dogs on the tracks and it is just a matter of whether the dogs can catch the cat or not and then trying to get to the tree. When the cat is treed, take me through that process. It is a matter of getting the hunter to the tree, sometimes that is easy sometimes it is not. It depends on where it is and how deep the snow is and how rough the country is.
