No Meatless Monday's & Farm Bill Extension

No Meatless Monday’s & Farm Bill Extension. I’m Greg Martin with today’s Northwest Report.

Recently a posting on the USDA’s website calling for Meatless Mondays as a way to help the environment that caused quite an uproar in the ag community. National Cattlemen's Beef Association spokesman, Mike Deering says the comments were quote extremely disparaging.

DEERING: It was amazing to see that in their newsletter, especially since they have messaging on Meatless Mondays against it. They have messaging on the nutritious value of beef. They have messaging on the safety of beef. They have messaging and their won research on the environmental sustainability of beef and so to see that was quite a shock.

USDA later made a public announcement apologizing and saying the statement was posted without proper clearance.

House Speaker John Boehner may bring up an extension of current farm programs - including disaster aid funds - as early as next week. If not next week - House sources say it may be in September. Boehner - along with House Majority Leader Eric Cantor - both have publicly said they haven't made a decision about bringing up the farm bill - but farm leaders, Democrats and Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack have stressed the need for disaster aid makes it crucial to quickly pass the farm bill.

Now here’s today’s Washington Grange report.
