Food Recall & Farm Bill Discussion

Food Recall & Farm Bill Discussion

Food Recall & Farm Bill Discussion. I’m Greg Martin with today’s Northwest Report.

It could take several weeks to complete, but the Senate has brought the Agriculture Committee's farm bill up for floor discussion and procedural votes. Senate Agriculture Committee Chairwoman Debbie Stabenow gives an overview of the cuts, reforms and new approaches of the Senate version of the Agricultural Reform, Food and Jobs Act.

STABENOW: The reforms in this bill start on page one with the repeal of direct payments, counter-cyclical payments and the average crop revenue election which has been called the ACRE program. We’re creating a new approach, a new program. that only helps farmers when there is a loss and only for crops they have actually planted. We’re strengthening payment limits. We are ending more than 100 programs and authorizations that are no longer needed. And we are doing all of this in order to cut the deficit by $23-billion dollars.

Windsor Quality Food Co. out of Toluca, Ill. is recalling approximately 96,480 pounds of meat lasagna products that contain egg and soy, both known allergens that were not declared on the product labels. The products are sold through Safeway in 13 states including Oregon, Idaho and Washington. Two products sold as “Safeway Select Five Cheese Lasagna” and “Safeway Select Meat Lasagna” both with a package code of April 4, 2013 are being recalled.

Now here’s today’s Washington Grange report.
