Malbec Inspires Cooperation

Welcome to Vine to Wine this is your host Linda Moran. Today I want to share some news about Malbec. I recently read an online article about Malbec and it was very interesting. As we know Malbec has entered the spotlight via Argentina and the success the Argentine wineries are having with is becoming well known. But Malbec is also a grape which hailed from the Cahors region of France, and it seems that rather than dismiss the Argentine success, the French have done something quite uncharacteristic and reached out to Argentina. The two Malbec regions have been holding an International Malbec Day alternating between Cahors and Argentina since 2008. Malbec growers are the guests of honour. May 2010 sees the third International Malbec Day back in Cahors. The French and the Argentineans, who between them have planted more than 90% of the worlds Malbec are working together to promote the variety. To me this is exciting news. Not just for the fact that the French are actually recognizing wine from some other part of the world but because it will open up awareness of Malbec in general. I think Malbec is versatile and delightful and the versatility of the grape is evident when you taste the differences between the two regions and the styles of wines being made. I recommend you pick up a Malbec from each of the regions and try them with friends over dinner. Andthank you for joining me on today's Vine to Wine.
