06/19/08 Cookie Competition

Oh, if only picking a President were as easy as it appears to be for subscribers of a certain ladies magazine to pick the next first lady; just choose your favorite cookie recipe and the rest will fall into place. At least that's what the magazines editors claim. Reportedly, in the last 4 presidential campaigns their readers have eerily predicted the next first lady by favoring her cookie recipe in the magazine's competition. For reasons I am unable to explain, that bothers me. Is it because for the first time in our nation's history we had a woman make a very strong campaign for the presidential nomination, and such contests seem to trivialize women's viability to be anything other than second fiddle? Or is it because such contests seem to transport us women back to the June Cleaver era? And let me emphasize, there is nothing wrong with being June Cleaver, in June Cleaver's time, but we've come a long way baby. But then who am I to fight a sixteen year winning streak. Shortbread or Oatmeal Butterscotch cookie anyone?
