11/16/07 Crafting a New Wine

Crafting a New Wine. I'm Greg Martin with today's Fruit Grower Report. Martin Olsen of Olsen Estates is just starting out. He's not new to the wine industry but this is his first venture into a winery and so far, things are going well. OLSEN: Well right now we have four whites available and our reds are scheduled to be bottled on the 5th of December. We have received very good feedback from people on our Riesling and also out oak Chardonnay. In addition to the Riesling and the oak Chardonnay, Olsen has a Pinot Gris and a stainless Chardonnay. And he is excited about the upcoming red wines. OLSEN: We're very excited about our Syrah we're going to be releasing. It is going to be 100% Syrah so we're not blending that and also doing a red blend. From the barrel samples we have given people, we've also received very good feedback on that. I'm very excited for people to taste and enjoy them. Olsen says that people tend to go more for red wines more than white. OLSEN: They look for reds more than they do whites. There are some people that just want to do white wine. Personally, me too. I spend a lot more money on red wine than I do on white and I enjoy drinking it more and in talking to folks at other wineries they sell more red wine too. Olsen Estates is part of the new Vintner's Village in Prosser, Washington. That's today's Fruit Grower Report. I'm Greg Martin on the Northwest Ag Information Network.
