Ever heard of an Enviropig? Now don't immediately picture your door knocking neighborhood activist, envirorpigs are the real squealing deal, pigs that have been genetically engineered to be cleaner for the environment. While the FDA has had their plate full attempting to regulate and navigate the booming organic industry, universities and corporations are urging the Food and Drug Administration to develop rules for genetically altered edible animals like enviropigs, and to do so quickly. The University of Guelph in Ontario Canada is ready to market pigs whose poop is less a pollutant and meat is purportedly healthier all due to an implanted gene that helps pigs to digest more phosphorus so that less is emitted in the manure meaning less ends up in runoff. Phosphorous is what can cause rivers to explode with algae blooms and kill aquatic life. If the FDA would get crackin other GMO animals like Omega3 enriched pigs and extra milk producing pigs are waiting in the pipe-line as well
