Holiday Celebrations Meet Summer Fire Risk
A Fourth of July firework lasts just seconds. But if it lands in dry grass, the damage can last much longer. With parts of the Southeast still rated anywhere from abnormally dry to severe drought, it's a timely reminder that one stray spark can threaten more than a backyard when fields, pasture, and timber are dry.The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is reminding residents to celebrate responsibly this Independence Day. Commissioner Wilton Simpson says while recent rainfall has reduced fire danger in some areas, wildfire risk hasn't disappeared. The department is encouraging everyone to follow local burn restrictions and use common sense when lighting fireworks.
The Florida Forest Service also recommends keeping fireworks away from dry grass, fields, forests, and other vegetation. Have a water source nearby, never leave fireworks unattended, and make sure used fireworks are completely cooled before throwing them away.
While the reminder comes from Florida, the same precautions apply across the Southeast wherever dry vegetation and fireworks meet.
