Many of the skills learned in military service translate naturally to life in agriculture: hard work, problem-solving, leadership, and a commitment to serving others.

Now, the American Farm Bureau Federation is encouraging California veterans who have found a second calling in agriculture to apply for its 2027 Veteran Farmer Award of Excellence. With support from Farm Credit, the national award recognizes U.S. military veterans and active service members who have demonstrated excellence in farming or agriculture while making a positive impact in their local communities.

The recipient will receive a $10,000 cash prize and reimbursement for travel and related expenses to attend the 2027 American Farm Bureau Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina.

According to American Farm Bureau President Zippy Duvall, the award recognizes veterans not only for their service to the nation, but also for the continued contributions they're making through agriculture.

Last year's recipient was South Carolina's retired Army Command Sergeant Major Matthew Rutter. After a 22-year military career, Rutter co-founded Project Victory Gardens and developed Farmer Bootcamp, helping fellow veterans discover opportunities in agriculture.

Applications are due September 1st, and Farm Bureau membership is not required. More information is available at https://www.fb.org/initiative/afbf-veteran-farmer-award-of-excellence
