Processing capacity has been a frequent topic of conversation in cattle country over the past several years. Now, USDA is offering a new funding opportunity aimed at helping eligible processors expand and strengthen the beef supply chain.

The agency is accepting applications for Phase 4 of the Meat and Poultry Processing Expansion Program, or MPPEP. USDA is making $60 million available through this latest funding round to help processors increase capacity, improve efficiency, and strengthen regional processing infrastructure.

This phase places a particular emphasis on the American beef industry. To qualify, an applicant's facility must primarily process cattle, although grant funds may also support other meat and poultry processing activities conducted at that facility.

Grants range from $10,000 to as much as $2 million and can be used for projects ranging from equipment purchases to larger expansion efforts.

Applications are due August 7. For links to program details and application information, visit https://www.rd.usda.gov/programs-services/business-programs/meat-and-poultry-processing-expansion-program-phase-4
