California’s newest voice on the Senate Agriculture Committee is laying out an ambitious vision for the next Farm Bill. In a release from the office of Senator Adam Schiff, Schiff outlined priorities ranging from nutrition assistance and specialty crop support to rural infrastructure, immigration reform, and protections for California’s Proposition 12 animal welfare law.

Among the proposals Schiff plans to pursue are legislation tied to specialty crop mechanization, artificial intelligence in agriculture, regional food systems, organic agriculture, and expanded fruit and vegetable purchasing in federal food programs. “It’s time for a Farm Bill that addresses the mounting challenges that farmers, farmworkers, and rural communities are facing,” Schiff said.

The release also highlights Schiff’s push to strengthen SNAP and other nutrition programs, increase support for specialty crop producers, expand rural broadband and health care investments, and improve protections for farmworkers. Schiff additionally reiterated his opposition to any Farm Bill language that would override California’s Proposition 12 standards.
