Wins for Agriculture

From the Ag Information Network, I’m Bob Larson with today’s Fruit Grower Report. The challenges the agricultural industry is currently facing don’t show many signs of slowing down any time soon, but that’s not to say there haven’t been a few legislative wins along the way.

Kate Tynan, Vice President at the Northwest Horticultural Council, says it’s been a pretty rough few years …

TYNAN … “You know, I will say we are so focused right now, at least from my personal time on trying to build upon the successes we’ve had on this H-2A space.”

But ag labor, Tynan says is getting some attention in Congress …

TYNAN … “These escalating labor costs are such, they’re not the only thing that growers are facing in terms of significant challenges, but it’s a significant one. And trying to do what we can to alleviate these challenges, that frankly are driven by federal government policy, it’s a pretty gargantuan task.”

Whether it’s the AEWR or disaster aid or any number of other challenges, Tynan says the administration has been listening …

TYNAN … “But the fact that we have seen such important wins and that we view opportunities for future wins is significant. You know, when you get to a point where if somebody wants to listen, the onus is on us to get them the information they need to be able to do that, and that’s really what we’re focused on at this juncture.”

Tynan says there’s still plenty of work left to do and they don’t intend on slowing down.
