A Global Appetite for Peanuts
What if the next big opportunity for U.S. peanuts was halfway around the world?Earlier this year, the American Peanut Council joined a USDA trade mission to Jakarta, Indonesia, stepping into one of Southeast Asia’s fastest growing markets. With 283 million people and a youth driven population, Indonesia is full of potential. At the Rasa Amerika festival, there was clear excitement for American flavors. Store visits showed familiar brands like Jif, Reese’s and Bob’s Red Mill already catching attention on shelves.
But success will not come easy, according to the National Peanut Board. The market is highly price sensitive, and lower cost suppliers create strong competition for raw peanuts. Still, there is a clear path forward. Premium processed products like peanut butter, snacks and specialty ingredients are gaining traction.
There is also a key deadline ahead. By October 27, 2026, all processed foods must meet halal certification requirements, meaning they must follow Islamic dietary guidelines for ingredients and preparation.
According to the National Peanut Board, with the right strategy, the U.S. peanut industry is ready to win over Indonesia’s growing middle class, one taste at a time.
