Southeast Agriculture Faces Decisions and Damage
Georgia farmers, it is decision time.Producers are voting on whether to continue funding commissions for corn, peaches, pecans, and tobacco. These programs support research, promotion, and education for growers statewide.
By law, they must be reaffirmed every three years, with two thirds of votes needed for continuation.
Ballots are mailed directly to eligible producers, and each must be signed on the return envelope to be counted.
Tobacco voting runs through March 30. Peaches and pecans vote April 1 through April 30. Corn follows from April 15 to May 15.
If you are a producer, this is your chance to shape the future of your industry.
Meanwhile in Alabama, farmers are dealing with freeze damage. The Department of Agriculture is urging specialty crop growers to report losses to their local USDA Farm Service Agency office.
Commissioner Rick Pate says, “We strongly encourage producers who experienced damage to contact their local FSA office and report those losses.”
Those reports could help unlock federal disaster assistance.
