Strengthening California Cattle Country
California’s agricultural future is getting a significant boost thanks to a 120 million dollar investment in veterinary medicine at the University of California, Davis. With a landmark gift from philanthropists Joan and Sanford I. Weill, the newly named UC Davis Weill School of Veterinary Medicine is expanding how it trains future veterinarians and cares for large animals across the state. The investment comes at an important time, as livestock producers continue to face biological threats, regulatory pressures and market uncertainty.
UC Davis has stood shoulder to shoulder with farmers during challenges such as H5N1 avian influenza, quickly ramping up testing through its Animal Health and Food Safety laboratories and providing real time mapping tools to strengthen on farm biosecurity. Researchers are also keeping watch for emerging risks like the New World screwworm and tracking disease trends through a new BioPortal.
In an Ag Alert from the California Farm Bureau, Chancellor Gary S. May underscored the university’s long standing commitment to agriculture and to preparing the next generation of veterinarians who will serve California’s rural communities.
