President Trump is focusing on trade this week, holding high-profile discussions in China and Japan that are drawing national and global attention. The talks come at a critical time for U.S. agriculture, as producers look for new market opportunities amid shifting global demand.

The National Cotton Council released a statement Monday expressing optimism about the administration’s recent trade progress. The group says it appreciates the steps made over the weekend and is encouraged by reports of a framework for an agreement with Vietnam, as well as China’s potential commitments to buy more U.S. agricultural goods.

NCC President and CEO Gary Adams said, “Historically, China represented a market of three to five million bales for U.S. cotton, but currently, sales have fallen by more than 95% from historical levels.” He added that the industry is encouraged by the ongoing dialogue between the two countries and strongly urges a new agreement that includes meaningful purchases of U.S. cotton by China.
