US Wheat Associates is in the middle of compiling its annual trade estimate, a key report that identifies market access challenges and opportunities for US wheat around the world. Director of trade policy, Ryan Olson, explains how this effort helps guide future trade priorities and strengthen relationships with global buyers.

“So we'll be doing some outreach to the trade and our wheat commissions to understand what they're concerned about and what in our regional offices to understand what major barriers are out there. We working as close as we can with our negotiators here in the US to address those barriers. And then it kind of a corollary to that is the upcoming US-Mexico-Canada agreement joint review, which is coming up around the middle part of next year. Our USTR negotiators are currently going through a notice and comment period for that review. We'll be participating in that.”

Olsen says us wheat Associates has secured key victories under the first USMCA agreement, and plans to keep building on those successes in future trade discussions.

“Taking a very close look at some of the changes that have happened in the marketplace over the past six, seven years, and then incorporating that into our into our comments, so that our negotiators can go into that review and understand how USMCA has affected growers in a positive way and maybe in a negative way.”
