Farm Bill this Fall
From the Ag Information Network, this is today’s Fruit Grower Report. With Congress back to work following the August recess, many wonder what our chances are of getting a new Farm Bill done.I asked U.S. Representative Dan Newhouse if he thinks it will get the much-needed attention sometime soon …
NEWHOUSE … “The short answer is yes, absolutely. You know, we passed HR 1 and that was signed into law on July 4th, which as the Chairman likes to say, has the lion’s share of the farm bill embedded in it.”
Which, Newhouse says should make a new Farm Bill a bit easier …
NEWHOUSE … “Many of the important things that we were working on were covered in HR 1 and so the ‘Skinny Farm Bill’ or the things that are left to do, which is about 25% I guess overall, are things that should be much easier to accomplish.”
And the Ag Chair, Newhouse says is on board …
NEWHOUSE … “The Chairman, Chairman Thompson, who was
with me in the district here just a few weeks ago, has told us and farmers that he has visited with that he wants to get this done as soon as possible.”
So, Newhouse says we need to get this done …
NEWHOUSE … “Agriculture needs to have the provisions that are afforded to the industry through a modern Farm Bill. There’s so many challenges already that farmers are facing, the federal government should not be counted amongst those challenges.”
Newhouse says the House has very few excuses.
