New U.S.–EU Trade Deal Offers Bright Outlook for Peanut Growers
Big news for peanut growers across Florida, Georgia, and Alabama: the United States and the European Union recently hammered out a trade deal that could crack open bigger markets for American peanuts. The U.S.–EU Framework Agreement promises to eliminate tariffs on U.S. industrial goods and expand access for farm products. Just as important, both sides agreed to tackle those pesky non-tariff barriers — the very ones that have caused headaches for peanut exports over the years.
For nearly ten years, the U.S. peanut industry has been pushing for relief from the EU’s strict sampling rules. Now, with this new deal, the outlook is looking a lot brighter.
Jamie Brown, Chairman of the United States Peanut Federation, didn’t mince words: “We are grateful for the efforts made by the Trump Administration to identify solutions to the non-tariff trade barrier issues the U.S. peanut industry has been facing… This agreement provides a sense of security to the U.S. peanut industry.”
