From the Ag Information Network, this is today’s Fruit Grower Report. Washington continues to produce more apples than any other state with this year’s crop forecast to be at or near a record.

As for the available apple varieties, Jon DeVaney, president of the Washington State Tree Fruit Association, says the top of our list hasn’t changed …

DeVANEY … “Well, Gala continues to be the number one variety, forecast to be about 18% of our state’s apple crop.”

Next, DeVaney says has displaced the Granny Smith at number two …

DeVANEY … “What’s interesting is that Honeycrisp continues to grow in volume and it’s quite popular as a lot of folks know, and it would be in the number two position this year, forecast to be around 15% of the crop.”

And for the first time, DeVaney says Cosmic Crisp makes the top five …

DeVANEY … “It sure has and, in fact, this year it’s about, forecast to be about 9.6%, so just short of 10% of the crop and breaks into the top five in varieties forecast for the first time.”

And is expected to continue growing …

DeVANEY … “That variety is continuing to take off towards the stars, as its name would suggest. And it reflects a lot of the investment our growers have continued to make over many years in developing new varieties and looking for novelties and new taste experiences for consumers within the apple category to make sure that we can meet the needs of diverse customers.”

Tune in tomorrow for more on the apples Washington state produces.

Gala is number one at 18% of production, followed by Honeycrisp at 15% (for the first time moving ahead of both Red Delicious and Granny Smith), Granny Smith at 14.7%, and Red Delicious at 12%. Cosmic Crisp makes its first appearance in the top five at 9.6%, up from just 1% in 2020 and 6% in 2023.
