Senate reauthorizes reporting act and new BSE categories. I'm Greg Martin with today's Northwest Report.
The Senate passed legislation to reauthorize the Livestock Mandatory Price Reporting Act of 1999 for five years late Wednesday. The measure passed without amendment by unanimous consent. House Ag Chairman Bob Goodlatte introduced the bill in the House in July of 2005. The House approved the measure a year ago - before the law expired on September 30th. Now the legislation heads to the White House for President Bush`s signature.
USDA by next month should present its proposal for bse risk category under revised OIE standards. Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service Administrator Ron DeHaven.
DEHAVEN: We are in the process as we speak of finalizing a packet that we will submit next month to the OIE for categorization of the United States under this new categorization scheme.
DeHaven was speaking to a Future Trends in Animal Agriculture Symposium in Washington DC. The latest OIE standards include 3 categories in it's revised BSE chapter. Negligible risk, controlled risk and undetermined risk. DeHaven says the revised BSE chapter comes as a result of member nations totally cutting off beef trade from other countries found to have one or more cases of BSE.
Now here's today's Washington Grange Report.
