U.S. Beef Exports Climb, But China Remains a Challenge
There's some encouraging news for the beef industry when it comes to international demand, although not every export market is moving in the right direction.According to USDA data compiled by the U.S. Meat Export Federation, August beef exports reached more than 86,000 metric tons, up four percent from a year ago. Export value climbed 13 percent to nearly 786 million dollars.
Strong demand from Taiwan and South Korea helped drive those gains. In fact, Taiwan posted its second-highest monthly beef export value on record.
But China remains a challenge. Ongoing trade restrictions and unresolved technical requirements continue to limit shipments of U.S. beef into that market.
Through August, total beef export volume was down seven percent compared to last year, although export value declined just one percent.
For California cattle producers, it's a reminder that international demand remains an important part of the broader beef market, even when access to individual countries becomes complicated.
