From the Ag Information Network, I’m Bob Larson. Many will argue that President Trump’s tariffs on many of our biggest trading partners will, if it hasn’t already, make life more difficult for ag producers.

But U.S. Meat Export Federation, President and CEO Dan

Halstrom says producing food for America and the world, we’re in an industry that faces different kinds of challenges every year …

HALSTROM … “Could it be a bit bumpy? I’m sure it will be, but honestly, it’s bumpy anyway. That’s the business. We’re a global market and every, there’s always something going on in the world that creates some turbulence.”

And yet somehow, Halstrom says we manage to pull through …

HALSTROM … “But what I do know, what I do know that’s certain is that we have a high-quality product and we’re seeing record demand from around the world for U.S. beef and pork so, for that reason I’m confident we can overcome some of these bumps in the road.”

But when it comes to tariffs, shouldn’t we have learned about their impact from previous experience? …

HALSTROM … “Yeah, I don’t know how much I learned, but we did grow beef from a $200 million market to a $2 billion market and that even was with tariffs. So, tariffs aren’t optimal, we all know that, but it doesn't eliminate business.”

Tune in tomorrow for more on what it takes to continue feeding the demand for U.S. meat in foreign markets.
