Tariffs or Not Pt 1

From the Ag Information Network, this is today’s Fruit Grower Report. Many people inside the ag industry and out have expressed concerns about the tariffs imposed by President Trump on many of our key trading partners.

But when asked if Congress should have more of a say in the imposition of tariffs, U.S. Representative Dan Newhouse says …

NEWHOUSE … “You know, that’s something I saw the Speaker respond to a question about that. He said if the administration goes beyond what our belief is his authority is, then yes.”

Because that, Newhouse says is our job …

NEWHOUSE … “I, myself, believe that that’s one of our constitutional responsibilities that falls under the category of what Congress should be involved with.”

Regardless, Newhouse says of the reasoning …

NEWHOUSE … “And that’s not to say that it’s not a reflection on the actions that are taken. It’s just a usurpation of what we should be involved in. It’s not purely an administrative or administration’s responsibility.”

It’s important, Newhouse says to get it right …

NEWHOUSE … “I try to be a constitutionalist about things. It doesn’t matter who’s in the White House. We have specific duties and responsibilities given to the legislative branch and I think we should follow through with those. And tariffs are one of those things.”

Listen tomorrow for more on using tariffs as a negotiating tool.
