NFU Policy Priorities Pt 1

From the Ag Information Network, I’m Bob Larson. The National Farmers Union members gathered recently to set their 2025 policy priorities at its national convention in Oklahoma City.

NFU President Rob Larew says one of the biggest priorities for this year has got to be a new farm bill …

LAREW … “One of the first ones is centered around the farm bill, and I think, broadly, the issue there is, like a lot of farmers out there, we know that we need changes to the existing safety net. We know that the current farm bill isn't adequate for today's conditions, so we want to make sure that Congress doesn't take its eye off the ball of getting a farm bill finished and make sure that it is strong enough and relevant for the next five years.”

Other priorities, Larew says are centered around fairness for the family farmers and ranchers across the country …

LAREW … “This is our long-standing support for things like farmers’ right to repair, mandatory Country of Origin Labeling, and making sure, generally, that we get monopolies out of the marketplace here in food and ag so that farmers have a fair shake.”

But Larew says if need be, they can be pretty bullish on this …

LAREW … “Because I think that President Trump understands not only America first but understands that monopolies can invoke too much power out there, and so by the people that he's been putting in place at the Department of Justice, at Federal Trade Commission, and even at USDA, we're pretty hopeful that this will be an issue that the new administration will tackle.”

Listen tomorrow for more on Larew on his list of concerns and about the continued uncertainty from the White House.
