From the Ag Information Network, I’m Bob Larson. Connell farmer, Ted Tschirky was recently elected President of the National Potato Council, a group responsible for being the voice of the American potato industry in the nation’s capital.

Tschirky says he first got involved with the Washington Potato Council that led to a roll on the board at NPC, and eventually to the executive committee and now to his term as committee President …

TSCHIRKY … “Well, I think it’s just part of the, to give back to the community, I guess, for your time and efforts and to keep potato growers and the industry whole, and basically try and educate the lawmakers, state and federal, of how thing affect you. And without a voice they don’t know what they don’t know.”

I asked Tschirky if he had a message for those out there in

the potato industry, what would it be? …

TSCHIRKY … “Well, I guess, keep informed and also just support your local legislators from county to state to federal so they can look to you for advice on how to handle some of the issues that come across their desk and to maybe push back against some of the issues that affect us in a negative way.”

Besides his work with the Washington Potato Commission and the National Potato Council, the third-generation farmer has been growing potatoes in Washington’s Columbia River Basin for 45 years.
