A Transition of Seasons in the San Joaquin Valley
One perk of the Ag Information Network is our network of broadcasters. Patrick Cavanaugh can be heard on these airwaves covering tree nuts and, on some occasions, his conversations branch out to be a bit more all-inclusive. Such was the case recently when he got this California ag update from Ryan Jacobsen, CEO of the Fresno County Farm Bureau…“So here we are in the early part of October where it’s the big transition time for so many crops here in the Valley. We’re finishing up those summer crops. Everything from peaches, plums, nectarines, pretty much finished at this time to tapering off to almonds, pistachios. We’re here just at the very tail end of most of that season. We go into now the more fall harvest: persimmons, pomegranates, walnuts, cotton, and some of the other things that we do here in the Valley.”
Jacobsen says it’s been a long, hot summer and that they are definitely seeing some quality issues linked to that. And then there’s another issue that’s popped up: highly pathogenic avian influenza in dairy cattle. We’ll chat more with him about what that looks like through the lens of the Fresno County Farm Bureau in an upcoming report.
