From the Ag Information Network, this is today’s Fruit Grower Report. The push for a new Farm Bill continues in Congress, as farm groups converged on the nation’s capital to urge passage of a new Farm Bill by year’s end.

Washington Republican Dan Newhouse says he’s feeling a bit more optimistic than he was before the August recess …

NEWHOUSE … “You know, I’m feeling better about it, after this week. We had literally hundreds of farmers descend upon Washington D.C. meeting with members of Congress and Senate, trying to impress upon them the urgency of getting a Farm Bill done. So, I’m hopeful that has had a positive effect.”

But Newhouse says not before the current extension expires

at the end of the month …

NEWHOUSE … “I’ve talked to the Chairman of the House Ag Committee, G.T. Thompson on this. Every time I see him, he probably walks the other way when I come into the room. But he told me that he’s anticipating this happening during the “lame-duck” which is after the election. I’m hopeful that that’s what will happen.”

Because the farmers, Newhouse says can’t take much more …

NEWHOUSE … “We have to get this done. You know the Farm Bill we’re currently operating under, even if we have an extension, is utilizing numbers that were developed back in, you know, 2012-2014 prior to the passage of the Farm Bill in 2018.”

Listen tomorrow for more on why getting a new Farm Bill passed this year is so important.
