From the Ag Information Network, this is today’s Fruit Grower Report. Who decides when it’s time to change your career path.

For Roger Lemstrom, founder and winemaker at Los Rocosos vineyard and winery, it began when his then wife decided she no longer wanted to be married …

LEMSTROM … “And so, I went back to living the middle-aged bachelor life. I hurt myself though, and I went to the V.A. and the doctor said, Roger, you can’t do this work anymore. You’re falling apart like a cheap suitcase.”

The Viet Nam Vet, who was living in Medford, Oregon at the time, says that was a lot to take in …

LEMSTROM … “I came home, and I made dinner, and I looked for a movie to watch. And I found a movie called Bottle Shock. I don’t know if you’ve seen it or not, but it’s roughly based on the true story of the first two American wines to win a blind tasting contest in Paris, France.”

The movie, Lemstrom says moved him …

LEMSTROM … “It took place in 1976 and I was just utterly charmed by the film.”

And everything, Lemstrom says happens for a reason …

LEMSTROM … “So, I enrolled in wine school that night, online, and I started attending at the Southern Oregon Wine Institute. And, out of that class of 32 people, seven of us finished, and four of us have labels.”

Tune in tomorrow for more on how Los Rocosos wines came to be … and why it’s never too late.
