Potato Council on Speaker and Farm Bill Pt 2
From the Ag Information Network, I’m Bob Larson. While the House attempts to replace recently removed Speaker Keving McCarthy, who dared bring a bipartisan bill to the table that temporarily prevented a government shutdown, the recently expired Farm Bill sits in limbo.National Potato Council CEO Kam Quarles doesn’t believe a “my way or the highway” strategy, by some in the majority, is best way to get things done …
QUARLES … “There are folks in the House who think that if they don’t get 100% of their somewhat volatile demands for various policy changes, then they have to stop the whole process and get rid of speakers and all the other things. That’s an incredibly destructive way to view a really important institution.”
And without ANY compromise, Quarles says they’re just wasting everyone’s time …
QUARLES … “Given this environment, I don’t know how long that’s going to take, but I do know that every day they’re spending on that, they’re not solving the government shutdown issues, they’re certainly not advancing a Farm Bill. So, this is not a great place to be in given the gravity of everything that people are facing.”
And in the long run, Quarles says nobody wins …
QUARLES … “You know, the big winners in this, to the extent there are winners? It’s our global adversaries. It’s people who wish the United States ill. They love this chaos. They love to see us fumbling the ball all over the field.”
Quarles says with all the challenges we face, this can’t be allowed to happen.
