The next step toward farm sustainability, according to Syngenta, is to track and manage data for on-farm practices. Trent Wimmer, key account sustainable solutions lead, said the company offers a qualitative tool called Cropwise Sustainability to help with this.

Wimmer… “By utilizing Cropwise Sustainability, we were able to track their farm management practices and their decisions. And by doing so, these aren't asking questions that, "Oh, if you answered yes, you're doing it right, or you answered this, no, you're doing it wrong." No, we're just trying to understand where that farmer sits within that crop and within that geography that they produce that crop. And by understanding their practices and their decisions, it allows us to benchmark, which is the most powerful piece. Because once we have that, we can actually compare them to their peers growing the same crop in the same geography or maybe sourcing their crop to a downstream partner.”

Wimmer said this is a powerful tool that should be used along with their qualitative tool called Cropwise Financials to get a clear picture of economic and environmental sustainability.
