I’m Bob Larson. Leadership development, educational programs, and other efforts to advance the U.S. potato industry are getting a big boost from Potato LEAF, or Leadership, Education & Advancement Foundation.

Founded two years ago, Vice President Mike Wenkel says they managed to raise over $2.1-million for programs like the Potato Industry Leadership Institute …

WENKEL … “In addition to the Leadership Institute, we also give out a $10,000 scholarship to a college graduate student that is working in potato research.”

For that honor, Wenkel says growers help in the evaluation process …

WENKEL … “Our hope is that that activity will continue to grow those scientists that we need for all of the important aspects of potato production, from breeding through agronomy practices to disease management, etc. In addition to that, our board is continuing to look at, are there other opportunities for us to continue building those leadership skills on our graduates and others through the industry.”

Wenkel says it’s great for giving back to the industry while providing for its future…

WENKEL … “You know, I think it’s a giving back and it’s just making sure that those people that are in the industry are really able to carry the message, to be able to make sure the industry is strong as a whole.”
