GOP Blocks Stop Gap
I’m Bob Larson. Senate Republicans, as promised, blocked (48-50 with 60 needed to advance bill) stop gap funding accompanied by a U.S. debt limit suspension and disaster aid, forcing Democrats to try to come up with an alternative to keep the government open and funded by Friday, the start of a new fiscal year.Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer blamed Republicans for risking a government shutdown, debt default, sky high joblessness and a massive loss in household wealth—plus disaster aid …
SCHUMER … “It would provide desperately needed emergency funding for millions of people affected by natural disasters from this summer, including hurricanes, wildfires and flooding.”
Plus 10 billion for Ag disasters through the WHIP+ and Emergency Watershed Protection Program and for pandemic livestock, dairy and sugar losses.
But Republicans would not back the bill’s suspension of the debt limit. GOP Leader Mitch McConnell …
McCONNELL … “There’s no chance Republicans will help lift Democrats’ credit limit, so they can immediately steam roll through a socialist binge that will hurt families and help China.”
Referring to the Biden social spending bill with its higher taxes and Republican’s claim, the threat of more inflation. McConnell and Republicans offered a clean bill with disaster aid, but no debt hike, Democrats blocked its consideration.
Schumer voted with Republicans against ending debate on his own bill, allowing him to move to reconsider it later in the week. But Democrats will more likely have to come up with a new plan to avert a Friday government shutdown and October credit default.
