BL: Welcome back to another “Fruit Bites” brought to you by Valent U.S.A. With us again is Valent’s Allison Walston. And this week Allison, we are talking about getting firmer cherries!

AW: Nobody wants mushy cherries. A crisp, firm cherry can make a world of difference not only to the enjoyment of the consumer, but also to a grower. Products like ProGibb can help.

BL: So in a crowded market, having firmer cherries is the end goal?

AW: To have firmer cherries at harvest, apply ProGibb from translucent green to straw color. This can also increase fruit size. Maturity can be slightly delayed, which can help with harvest management.

Remember Travis Schoenwald from a couple of weeks ago? He recommends applications to have a good amount of drying time, warmer weather following and try not to apply right before a rain event as this can lead to cherries cracking. Some cherries like Skeena or other early varieties are very susceptible to gibberellic acid, so use lower rates.

BL: Well, thanks Allison. Join us again next time for Fruit Bites, brought to you by Valent. Until then, I’m Bob Larson.
