Osama El-Lissy is deputy administrator with USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. He says the United States, Canada and Mexico are holding simultaneous illuminations this Week to demonstrate our unified commitment to protecting agriculture and natural resources from devastating plant pests and diseases. He emphasizes that plant pests and diseases know no political boundaries. Meanwhile, why did they choose green? The light green signifies a healthy green plant. In celebration of the United Nations International Year Plant Health, USDA is partnering with the North American Plant Protection Organization in Niagara Falls State Park to hold a special illumination ceremony on April 19th and 20th from seven to nine p.m. for 15 minutes at the top of every hour. During that time, the falls will glow with a green light to emphasize the need to protect plant help across North America and around the world.
