It’s time for your Farm of the Future Report. I’m Tim Hammerich.

With the rise of cryptocurrencies like bitcoin, some in agriculture are wondering if the underlying technology, blockchain, might also be useful for supply chains. But what is blockchain anyway? And how could its use help solve agricultural problems? Those questions are the reason for the “Blockchain in Agriculture” free virtual conference happening this Friday, February 26th. Here’s organizer Peter Schott.

Schott… “If you think about the connection from an animal producer in Malaysia to a farmer in North Dakota. That you know, their beans grown might be eaten by that animal in Malaysia, all the different sources between it. What are some ways that the industry can help connect the dots between those two groups so they can serve each other better? And when you bring up blockchain with people, you get a very wide range of responses: to they just think of cryptocurrency and conspiracy type of stuff, to blockchain is going to completely revolutionize the industry, to blockchain is just a solution looking for a problem to solve.”

Schott is hoping to welcome all of these perspectives in speakers that will include farmers, agribusiness leaders, entrepreneurs, and technologists.

Schott… “For people that maybe know nothing about blockchain, but have supply chain or traceability problems, for them to have a chance to introduce: here's some things we're working on. Are there ways that blockchain could help?”
