**USDA says a Texas facility designed to produce sterile flies for New World Screwworm control will open next spring, earlier than expected.

The facility is expected to produce 100 million sterile flies per week by the end of 2027, and 300 million weekly by the end of 2028.

The facility comes after the first U.S. infestation of New World screwworm in three decades was detected in Texas this summer.

**Canadian trade officials met with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer last week as both countries work to avoid new tariffs scheduled to take effect today.

President Trump has proposed 50% tariffs on nearly $20 billion worth of Canadian imports, including products that previously received exemptions under the USMCA.

Canadian officials have indicated they could offer concessions on some U.S. trade concerns in exchange for dropping the new tariffs.

**American produce growers are facing increasing competition from imports during periods when domestic crops are also available.

The American Farm Bureau Federation reports produce imports increasingly overlap with U.S. growing seasons instead of supplying fruits and vegetables when American production is unavailable.

Farm Bureau says that shift places more financial pressure on domestic specialty-crop producers.

American growers frequently face higher labor, regulatory and production expenses than foreign competitors, making competition difficult.
