Colorado livestock producers now have an updated source of information available for finding hay supplies.

Wendy White with the Colorado Department of Agriculture says the 2020 Colorado Hay Directory is an important source for producers.

White:” Our annual Colorado Hay Directory is really popular, especially in times like this when we’re starting to experience some drought conditions. It’s a really popular publication to help connect Colorado hay producers and buyers - the livestock owners that are looking for hay. So we’re always very proud to have that available to people to help connect buyers and producers of hay in Colorado.”

White says the online version is easy to find.

White: “So I currently have it available online at www.coloradoagriculture.com but we’ll have the print version available in the next couple weeks as well.”

The Colorado Hay Directory is a free publication. It lists producer names, phone numbers, amounts and types of hay for sale and bale size and shape. The publication divides Colorado listings by counties along with a list of hay related products and services.

Colorado farmers and ranchers expect to harvest 710,000 acres of alfalfa hay this year, down 20,000 acres from 2019. They expect to harvest 700,000 acres of other hay in 2020, down 30,000 acres from last year. Alfalfa production is forecast at 2.13 million tons, down 21 percent from 2019. The numbers come from the Agricultural Yield Survey conducted by the Mountain Regional Field Office of the National Agricultural Statistics Service.
