02/22/06 Idaho Alfalfa and Forage Conference

Some national and international experts will share their knowledge with Idaho producers at the Alfalfa and Forage Conference next Monday and Tuesday in Twin Falls. University of Idaho forage specialist Glenn Shewmaker says the University of Nebraska's Robert Wilson is known for his expertise with weed control in alfalfa and rotations. SHEWMAKER "Done a lot of work on the Roundup Ready and also Roundup in rotations in other crops. He's just got some real good experiment results and a lot of just practical knowledge on how to manage these different herbicides and the advantages and disadvantages of each." Shewmaker will also report on his university study on Roundup Ready alfalfa in Idaho. SHEWMAKER "It's very effective especially at establishment. It would depend on weed pressure but especially grassy weeds, timely control of grassy weeds. And then even later on in the stand as plants die out grasses tend to invade stands and so marketing becomes an issue. So this gives us an opportunity to clean up old stands as well."
